Description

A simple and fun recipe for soft garlic naan, perfect for scooping up curries or enjoying on its own.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 3 tablespoons plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (or melted butter)
  • 45 garlic cloves, minced
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
  • Melted butter or ghee (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: Combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Stir well and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of all-purpose flour and salt.
  3. Combine the mixtures: Add the activated yeast mixture, yogurt, and olive oil into the flour mixture. Stir until well blended.
  4. Knead the dough: Lightly flour your working surface and knead the dough for about 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Let the dough rise: Shape it into a ball, place it in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 1 to 2 hours until doubled in size.
  6. Shape the naan: Once risen, punch down the dough, divide it into equal portions, and roll each into an oval shape, about ¼-inch thick.
  7. Cook the naan: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the naan for about 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown. Brush with melted butter or ghee and sprinkle with minced garlic and herbs if desired.

Notes

Don’t skip the yeast activation for fluffy naan. Use flour gradually while kneading to avoid a dry dough.
